Safer Summer Skin

The summer sun is shining bright, and the outdoor activities are blooming. Summer is the perfect time to soak up the sun, but you have to be careful when it comes to your skin. Your aging loved one’s skin is especially sensitive to the sun’s rays, so it is vital to make sure they are well protected while outdoors.

  • Sunscreen – The first – and probably the most important – step to protecting you and your aging loved one from the sun is wearing sunscreen. Sunscreen is a quick and vital step in preventing skin cancer. Be sure to use an SPF 30 or higher for the best protection.
  • Light Clothing – Another way to prevent sunburn is wearing light and loose clothing that covers your arms and legs. The clothing should be light in material and color to avoid overheating. You should also wear a sunhat and sunglasses to protect your head and eyes.
  • Shade – While some sunshine can be healthy, it’s important to spend time in the shade as well. If you are going to the park for a picnic, make sure you pick a spot with trees. If you can’t find natural shade, you can always create your own with an umbrella.
  • Medication Check! – Many people don’t realize it, but certain medications can make your aging loved one’s skin even more sensitive. Be sure to consult a doctor and read the label on the prescription before planning a trip outdoors.

If you need to pick up some sun screen, sun glasses or light clothing, try heading to Target! Target is a Minnesota based retailer with over 70 locations located throughout the state-there is sure to be one near you! If you are looking for a park with plenty of shade check out one of Minneapolis’s 180 parks, many of which offer picnic areas and plenty of trees to provide you with adequate shade!
